Attachment

Attachment - What is it and why is it so important in early years?

Bonding and secure attachment is fundamental to our very youngest learners, ensuring babies and young children feels safe and calm.

"A securely attached child will store an internal working model of a responsive, loving, reliable care-giver, and of a self that is worthy of love and attention and will bring these assumptions to bear on all other relationships." John Bowlby (The Attachment Theory).

It is natural, strong and is the scaffolding that allows your little one to feel secure while they learn grow and explore.

Below are just some of the incredible effects that attachment has with babies and children.

  • Babies are born with an innate drive to build a secure attachment with their primary caregivers, critical to support their development through childhood and into adulthood.

  • Before a baby is going to learn anything new, they must have a secure attachment which allows them to feel safe, calm and understood.

  • It provides a baby/child with confidence that their needs will be met.

  • When a baby has a secure attachment with you, you become their secure base. This will allow the baby to confidently explore their environment and know that they can check in with you when they need to.

  • A secure attachment allows for optimal development for a child.

  • Children with secure attachments are more likely to be more resilient and be more willing to try things independently.

  • Children will be able to form stronger relationships with others.

  • They always know they can return to those they are securely attached to for comfort and to be soothed.
